How to Take and Share a Screenshot

Take a screenshot on Windows or Mac and attach it to your chat with Crelate Support.

Written by Amber Roder

A screenshot helps Support understand what you are seeing and speeds up your chat. This article shows how to take a screenshot on Windows and on a Mac, and how to send it to Support.

On Windows

Option 1: Capture your entire screen

  1. Press the Windows key + Print Screen (PrtScn) at the same time.

  2. The screen dims briefly, and Windows saves the screenshot as a file.

  3. To find it, open File Explorer, select Pictures, and then select Screenshots.

Pressing PrtScn by itself copies the screenshot but does not save a file, so you would need to paste it into another program, such as Paint, and save it from there.

Option 2: Capture part of your screen with the Snipping Tool

  1. Press Windows key + Shift + S, or open the Snipping Tool from the Start menu and select New.

  2. Drag your cursor around the area you want to capture.

  3. Select the notification that appears, or open the Snipping Tool, and then select Save.

  4. Name the file, choose where to save it, and select Save.

💡 Pro Tip: Windows key + Shift + S is the fastest way to capture part of your screen, because there is no app to open first.

On a Mac

Option 1: Capture your entire screen

  1. Press Shift + Command + 3 at the same time.

  2. A thumbnail of the screenshot appears briefly in the lower-right corner of your screen.

  3. The screenshot saves to your Desktop as a file whose name begins with “Screenshot” and includes the date and time.

Option 2: Capture part of your screen

  1. Press Shift + Command + 4 at the same time. Your cursor becomes a crosshair.

  2. Drag the crosshair around the area you want to capture, and then release.

  3. The screenshot saves to your Desktop automatically.

To cancel before you release, press Esc.

💡 Pro Tip: Press Shift + Command + 5 to open a toolbar with the same options. Select Options in the toolbar to choose where your screenshots are saved.

Screenshots of an error

If Support asks for a screenshot of an error, capture the entire browser window, not just the error message. Anything shown around the error, such as the page you were on or open Developer Tools, helps the team investigate.

  • Windows: Press Windows key + Print Screen to capture your entire screen.

  • Mac: Press Shift + Command + 3 to capture your entire screen. To capture only the browser window, press Shift + Command + 4, press the Space bar, and then select the window.

Send the screenshot to Support

  1. Select the Help button in Crelate and start a chat with Support.

  2. Select the attach icon in the chat.

  3. Choose the screenshot file you saved and send it. On Windows, it is in Pictures > Screenshots. On a Mac, it is on your Desktop unless you chose another location.

If you are emailing Support, attach the file to your email instead.

Key takeaway

On Windows, press the Windows key + Print Screen to save a screenshot of your entire screen, or use the Snipping Tool to capture part of it. On a Mac, press Shift + Command + 3 for your entire screen or Shift + Command + 4 for part of it. Attach the saved file to your chat with Support from the Help button in Crelate. For an error, capture the entire browser window.
