Solution

Microsoft Word provides two methods that can be used to repair most documents.

Option 1 - Re-save the document

If the document is an older .DOC file format, the easiest way to repair it and take advantage of more robust features of Word is to simply re-save it as a .DOCX file.

Option 2 - Repair the document

This option tells Microsoft Word to inspect and perform automatic repair procedures on the file in question.

  1. Start Microsoft Word.

  2. On the File menu, click Open.

Note In Word 2007 or Word 2010, click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Open.

  3. In the Open dialog box, click to select the file that you want to open.

  4. Click the down arrow on the Open button, and then click Open and Repair.

More information on Open & Repair can be found here.

NOTE: It is possible that you will need to perform both options to successfully repair the file. Open & Repair it, then save it as a DOCX.
